Family room decorated for Valentine's Day with heart-shaped balloons and roses

Love is in the air. Create the perfect Valentine's Day at home.

Who wants to share the most romantic day of the year with a bunch of strangers at a restaurant? This year, your Athens, Georgia home can be a place of bliss and harmony as you set the stage for romance or some family love and appreciation. Let’s face it, Christmas and New Year’s are long gone, and we could all use some cheering up by marking this extra special occasion with some DIY Valentine’s Day decorations and new ways to celebrate.

First, a little background on why we celebrate. Did you know that Valentine’s Day dates back to ancient Rome, and the traditional heart-shaped box of chocolates was introduced in 1861 by Richard Cadbury of the famous candy company? Consumers will spend an entry door. Make a picture windows and put twinkly lights in a planter or candles at the door to make a stunning entrance.

2. Set the mood with a romantic tablescape

This could be the time to polish up your silver, pull out the good china dishes, and use cloth napkins. Add a floral centerpiece, light the candles, and pray you didn’t burn the dinner.

Then again, it’s also the perfect time to let the kids decorate for Valentine’s Day with crafts like table runners made from a roll of pink craft paper and cut-out paper or painted hearts. Put some votive candles in a couple of mason jars or paint the inside of the jars to use as a vase, and voila, you’ve set a place everyone can be proud of.

3. Don’t be afraid to borrow decorations from Christmas

All those red bows, battery candles in the windows, red faux berry branches, or that cozy red and black buffalo check wrapping paper or pillows (Go Bulldogs!) have a new purpose this season. Outline your living room doorway or fill a big glass container with white twinkle lights. Put some red tea lights in glass votives and scatter them around your home in Athens. Dim the lights and see how beautiful everything and everyone becomes by candlelight.

4. Start Valentine’s Day with a breakfast date

Surprise your loved ones by setting the breakfast table (or, better still, a bed tray) with hearts and flowers and serve some heart-shaped pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream. Place surprise post-it notes on mirrors, windows, and unexpected places around the house with sweet expressions of your love.

5. Romantic Valentine’s decorating with food and drink

You know the way to anyone’s heart... Feed them!

It's easy to create a heart-shaped cake by baking a layer cake using one square pan and one round pan. Cut the round cake down the middle and attach the halves to two sides of the square cake to create a heart, then frost and decorate.

Make a beautiful devil’s food cake with white frosting and red hearts. Place it on a pretty cake stand. Or how about an angel food cake with a pretty flower bouquet emerging from the hole in the middle?

Bake cookies from homemade roll-out dough or slice up a simple premade dough. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters or simply frost and trim with red and pink sprinkles.

Create a fun pink punch in a bowl with a floating heart-shaped ice form. Or treat yourself to a pretty pink signature cocktail, a wine tasting or champagne with strawberries in crystal flutes. Top it all off with a toast to love!

With Valentine’s Day upon us, what better way to show your love than new windows or doors for your home. You already know she loves to dress up the home place and everybody benefits from this investment.
